Colorectal Cancer Screening with FIT
Colon cancer is the third leading cause of cancer death in the United States. Many of these deaths could be prevented if cancer is detected early through recommended screening. However, for a variety of reasons, about one-third of South Carolinians over 50 have not yet been screened.
The fecal immunochemical test, or FIT, offers a quick and easy screening option for people with average risk for colon cancer. This test can be done at home using a low-cost kit. It requires only one stool sample, requires no unpleasant bowel prep, special diet, or change in medications. Studies show that the FIT is more sensitive in detecting cancer than previous stool tests.
If you’re over age 50 (or age 45 and African American) and have not been screened for colorectal cancer, please ask your doctor about the new FIT (fecal immunochemical test).
